Driftsand is a meditative falling-sand toy that is also a generative instrument. Pour coloured sand into a glass vessel and it falls, piles at its angle of repose, and avalanches when you tilt — just like a real sand-art bottle. The twist: every grain that settles plays a note, so the simple act of pouring quietly composes a stream of ambient music.
Pour, mix, and watch it react
There are eight materials in the tray, and they behave like the real thing. Water flows and finds its level; oil floats and catches fire; fire turns water to steam and burns slowly through an oil slick; snow melts near heat; and a seed dropped near water sprouts into a plant that climbs, branches, and blooms. Glowdust and embers drift upward and light the scene.
Three ways to make it yours
- Vessels — pour into an Hourglass, a Terrarium, a floating Orb, or an apothecary Flask.
- Palettes — warm Sunset or cool Midnight, each with its own sand colours and a whole-scene mood. Switch and every grain on screen recolours at once.
- Soundpacks — a warm marimba (Emberglow) or a glassy music box (Aurora), each tuned to its palette.
Made to drift
Turn on Mirror mode and every pour mirrors across the vessel for instant mandala symmetry. Tilt your phone to pour and to make heaps cascade. And when you set it down, Driftsand keeps itself alive — fireflies lift, embers drift, a stray seed takes root — gently composing on its own. It is equal parts fidget toy, screensaver, and instrument.
How to use
Drag anywhere to pour the selected material into the vessel. Pick a material from the dock along the bottom — sand, seeds, water, oil, fire, glowdust, snow, or erase — and tap the sand orb to choose a colour band (different colours layer up into sand-art stripes). Tilt your phone to pour and to make piled sand avalanche and water slosh. Open the Scene sheet (top-right) to switch the vessel shape (Hourglass, Terrarium, Orb, Flask), change the palette, pick a soundpack, or turn on Mirror mode for instant symmetry. Toggle Sound on to hear the music — every grain that lands plays a note tuned to where it fell. Leave it untouched and it drifts into a living screensaver that keeps gently playing on its own.
